The day when we will enter a new phase in our lives as students of Bsc Ag 3rd year is very near. That day will be our first day of Practical Crop Production which will transform us from ordinary students to true agrarians.During 3rd year, we are required to grow rice in 1st semester and wheat in 2nd semester. So instead of going home for a break after winding up our exams, we will beat the sweltering heat of Pantnagar to cultivate Paddy. We will be divided into groups of 8 students and each group will get 1 hectare of land. So each student will be cultivating 250 meter square of land.We are first required to prepare a nursery, and after sometime the seedlings from this nursery will be transplanted in the main field. We would be working 8 hours a day, 4 hours in morning and 4 hours in evening.Once we are done with preparing the nursery, we would take some days off and go to our homes, and we would have to come back in time for transplanting.
Classes will be suspended during this time. When our normal schedule of classes will restart in August we would have to take out time to look after the fields too.
To outsiders who are not familiar with agriculture, this may sound like toiling in the scorching sun amidst dirt and grime. But for people who know or wish to learn about agriculture, this is learning by doing.
All the best to all my friends who are gearing up for PCP :)
